The aim of Stephenson's early work was to depict road kill in a beautiful way.
"My so called "ugly teddies" are a result of aesthetically pleasing mediums combined with repulsive subject matter. This is to purposely create conflict of emotion. Continuing the same theme, the ceramic pieces are based on the 1950's Wade Whimsies, where the size is endearing and subject matter less apparent."
The subject of road kill lead to a provocative sculpture on the subject of pigeons in towns and cities and the love/hate attitudes they incur. The sculpture went on to be used in a solo performance/exhibition in Southport town centre to interact with the general public.
