Freud's theory of the Uncanny that when something normal is disorientated it reveals a hidden abnormality.

A lot of Emily Stephenson's ceramic pieces have strong affiliation with the theory of the Uncanny, reconstructing familiar objects into oddities.
       "The Uncanny has taken a front seat in my more recent works. Francis is a doll of an affectionate Downs Syndrome child opposed to the mealy mouthed collectable dolls. Patches originated from an image of a breast enhancement where the skin around the breasts had been badly scarred in surgery, creating patchy, deformed skin. This piece exploited the repercussions of surgery while humanising the common teddy bear. Many of my ceramics have an underlying theme of deceiving beauty."
       
Influences have been particularly Robert Gober and Kiki Smith as well as Conor Wilson and the Chapman Brothers.
